Apply for registration of the ELT emergency transmitter

Under certain conditions, you can apply to register an ELT emergency transmitter code or change an existing registration.

Each 406 MHz ELT emergency device emits a unique identifier when activated. This can be used to

• alert the emergency services,
• assign emergency calls received to specific aircraft,
• inform the owners.

In order for an emergency call to be assigned to an aircraft, you as the owner must first register the ELT emergency transmitter code of your aircraft or have it changed if only data changes.

In particular, the ELT code must be reprogrammed or changed when the aircraft is imported from abroad or exported. This also applies to a change of ownership.

You can complete the following services with the application:

• Registration of the ELT emergency transmitter code
• Changing the registration of an ELT emergency transmitter code

To register or change an existing registration, you must enter the ELT code in accordance with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This is a 15-digit identification number that you receive from the manufacturer of your aircraft.

In the application, you must also provide general information about the aircraft and state its location. You must name at least one emergency contact. However, it is strongly recommended that you provide at least 2 emergency contacts.

When you register or amend an existing registration, the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt will have the necessary information regarding the ELT emergency transmitter.

• Application for registration or change of registration of a COSPAS/SARSAT emergency transmitter 406MHZ

for private individuals, sole traders and organizations that do not have their residence/registered office in Germany:

• Authorization to serve and receive documents

for the representation of private individuals or sole proprietors or for the application or representation of companies, associations or GbRs:

• Proof of authorization to represent (for your organization)

for registration or change of registration of an air sports device:

• Extract from the register of air sports equipment

Please refer to the application form to find out which (further) documents are required in your case.

• You have an aircraft
  • which does not yet have an ELT emergency transmitter code registration (application for registration) or
  • which already has an ELT emergency transmitter code registration (application for change of registration).
• You are the owner of the affected aircraft or a representative.

• Objection

You can apply to register or change the registration of an ELT emergency transmitter code online or by post, e-mail or fax.

Online application:

• Go to the federal portal verwaltung.bund.de and complete the online application.
• You can upload your documents directly.
• Submit the application online.
• The Luftfahrt-Bundesamt will check your application.
• You will receive a decision and a fee notice.
• Once you have paid the fees, you can retrieve the notification of registration or change.

By post, e-mail and fax:

• Call up the forms for registering or changing the registration of an emergency transmitter code on the LBA website.
• Complete the forms and compile the required documents.
• Send all documents to the LBA.
• The further procedural steps are the same as for the online application.

There is no deadline.
