Medical first aid in case of occupational accident or disease
Do you need initial medical treatment for an occupational or commuting accident or a recognized occupational disease? Then the statutory accident insurance will cover the costs.
Description
If you have suffered a health impairment as a result of an accident at work or on the way to work or a recognized occupational disease, you are eligible for primary medical care. This is provided by physicians.
If, due to the nature or severity of the occupational or commuting accident or a recognized occupational disease, accident medical treatment is necessary, this will be provided following the initial treatment. The free choice of physician may be restricted with regard to the accident physician.
The costs of initial medical treatment are covered directly by your employers' liability insurance association or accident insurance fund.

Procedure
The official investigation principle applies in statutory accident insurance. This means that your employers' liability insurance association or accident insurance fund automatically ("ex officio") carries out all the necessary investigations as soon as it learns of your occupational or commuting accident or occupational disease.
- Seek out a suitable doctor, depending on the damage to your health.
- In principle, there is free choice of doctor. In the case of occupational accidents, it is advisable to visit a doctor who is involved in the transit doctor procedure of the statutory accident insurance. Alternatively, your employers' liability insurance association or accident insurance fund can help you find a suitable doctor.
- Please inform your doctor that the reason for your visit is an occupational accident, commuting accident or occupational disease.
- You can find out which employers' liability insurance association or accident insurance fund is responsible for you on the website of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).
You can also contact your Berufsgenossenschaft or Unfallkasse online or by mail.
