Applying for (new) approval for microlight aircraft

If you own an ultralight aircraft that is subject to registration, you must register it under certain circumstances.

The air sports equipment register stores the data of all ultralight aircraft, ultralight helicopters and gyrocopters registered in Germany. You must apply for a license plate for air sports equipment that requires registration in order to fly it. In this case, your air sports equipment will be registered for you in the register of air sports equipment by the authorized air sports associations.

Air sports equipment requiring registration includes three-axle aircraft with an empty weight of over 120 kilograms, for example

• Trikes,
• gyroplanes and
• paramotor trikes.

Personal data such as the name and address of the owner as well as technical data, for example

• Type and model of aircraft and airframe serial number,
• nationality and registration mark of the aircraft and
• the sheet number of the aircraft register.

Under special circumstances, German authorities may access your data. This applies

• for administrative measures in the field of air traffic,
• for the prosecution of infringements of aviation regulations or
• for the prosecution of criminal offenses or for the prevention of threats to public safety.

You must carry the certificate of registration with you when operating your aircraft.

• Copy of identity card (front and back) or passport and registration certificate
• Proof of acquisition of ownership of the aircraft
• Proof of airworthiness in accordance with the Ordinance on the Inspection of Aircraft
• Confirmation of insurance for the aircraft owner
• Proof of deletion if the aircraft was last entered in a public register outside the scope of this ordinance
• Frequency allocation
• Noise certificate
• In the case of registration by a representative: Original power of attorney from the owner

If you wish to register your microlight aircraft for the first time, you must apply in writing by post or email to have your details entered in the register of microlight aircraft:

• Print out the application form on the website of the authorized air sports associations and complete it in full.
• Send the application form with the required documents to either
  • by post or
  • by e-mail to the address of your responsible air sports association.
• If your application is complete, you will receive a certificate of registration by post.

There is no deadline.

It takes approximately 5 days to process your admission. Depending on the workload, however, processing may take longer.
