Location factors
In addition to the economically strong Rhine-Main region with its internationally important financial services sector, Hesse's success as a business location is based on industries with high added value such as mechanical engineering, the metal and electrical industry, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, the automotive industry, medical technology and the materials technology industry as well as the advertising and design industry.
For example, Hesse is Germany's largest biotechnology production centre. In addition, Hesse is one of the leading locations for information and communication technology (ICT) - also in an international comparison. The ICT sector is an important trailblazer for digitalisation in Hesse. The overarching goals of the Digital Hesse strategy are to overcome social challenges, ensure sustainable economic development and strengthen Hesse's innovative power.
However, the Hessian economy is also well positioned in the field of environmental technology and resource efficiency - one of the most important future markets of the 21st century. Innovative companies from segments such as water, waste, energy and efficiency technologies will increasingly participate in the growth of this global market in the future.
Small and medium-sized companies are the backbone of the Hessian economy. Over 99% of all Hessian companies belong to the SME sector, which employs - depending on the data source - up to almost two thirds of employees subject to social security contributions and provides almost seven out of ten training places.
Hesse is characterised by a favourable mix of large and medium-sized companies as well as manufacturing and service companies.
First-class transport connections contribute to its international character: In addition to the dense motorway network, these include the railway junctions and, above all, Rhine-Main Airport. The latter ensures that Companies have fast connections to business partners in Europe and around the world.
Around half of Hesse's industrial turnover is generated through exports, which means that Hesse is well positioned in foreign trade with its knowledge and research-intensive products. The international orientation of Hessian companies is without alternative against the background of the growth dynamics in the newly industrialising countries.
Many universities and research institutions, international organisations and networks are based in Hesse. Highly qualified experts from all over the world work together in Hesse on the products of tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.
