    Description

    The first law exam concludes your law studies at university.

    It is divided into 2 examinations:

    • The state compulsory subject examination

    • The university specialization examination

    The state compulsory subject examination counts for 70% of the overall grade. It includes a written and an oral part.

    The specialization examination counts for 30% of the overall grade. It also includes a written and an oral part.

    You can decide on the order of the two examinations.

    The first state law examination is the basis for the preparatory service and therefore also for the second state law examination.

    Prerequisites

    For admission to the compulsory state examination, you must

    • have attended at least one course in which key qualifications were taught,
    • have successfully attended a foreign-language law course or a law-oriented language course,
    • have participated in one compulsory study group each for beginners in civil law, criminal law and public law,
    • have completed practical study periods totaling three months,
    • have successfully passed an intermediate examination in the Law degree program during their studies,
    • have successfully participated in one advanced exercise each in civil law, criminal law and public law under the academic responsibility of a university lecturer and
    • have successfully participated in a law course under the academic responsibility of a university lecturer, in which the historical, philosophical or social foundations of law, with particular consideration of the ethical foundations and the methods of its application to individual topics were dealt with in an exemplary manner (basic course), or in a corresponding seminar; this must not be the seminar in which the university specialization examination is taken,
    • have studied at the Faculty of Law at Kiel University for at least two semesters immediately prior to the application for admission to the state compulsory subject examination. This does not apply to registration for the repeat examination.

    Procedure

    You submit the application in writing to the competent authority. They will check that the requirements are met and inform you of their decision.

    Deadlines

    You submit your application for admission to the Judicial Examination Office at least six weeks before the start of the examination.

    Please note that different deadlines apply for the use of the free attempt and the repeat attempt to improve grades.

    Failure to do so cannot be rectified.
