The Equipment and Product Safety Act obliges the competent authorities to ensure effective monitoring of the placing on the market of products and products placed on the market.

In this context, market surveillance authorities advise and monitor manufacturers, distributors and importers. They investigate consumer complaints, carry out random safety checks of products and remove dangerous products from the market. In cooperation with customs, they prevent the import of dangerous products.
 

Organizationally, the 3 regional councils of Darmstadt, Giessen and Kassel are integrated into the market surveillance authorities.
