Landscape conservation

Landscape protection includes all measures for the special protection and care of nature and landscape of a particular area.

The objectives are the preservation, development or restoration of

• performance and functionality of the ecosystem,
• regenerative capacity and sustainable usability of natural resources,
• diversity, character or beauty of the landscape,
• special cultural-historical significance of the landscape,
• special importance for recreation.

In order to protect landscapes, certain parts can be declared landscape protection areas. In these landscape protection areas, all actions are prohibited that change the character of the area, impair the landscape or the performance and functionality of the ecosystem or run counter to the special protective purpose.

Landscape protection areas are designated in order to maintain or restore the typical character of the natural area and to secure it for use by future generations.

The higher nature conservation authorities are responsible for the designation of landscape protection areas. The contact persons of the citizens are the lower nature conservation authorities at the district administrations or the magistrates of the independent cities.
