Apply for a new driving license

If your driver's license has been revoked by a court decision or by the driver's license office, you can apply for a new license after the expiration of any blocking period that may have been set.

If your driver's license has been revoked, you can reapply for it after the expiration of a blocking period, if one has been set. In the application procedure, you must prove that you have regained your ability and suitability to drive a motor vehicle.

The driving license is issued for an unlimited period.

For classes C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE and D1E, the driving license is issued for a limited period.

Contact the driving license authority responsible for you.

• valid identity card or passport (if necessary with current certificate of residence)
• current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal)
• eye test certificate (not older than 2 years)
• Proof of participation in a training course in first aid

For the application for driving license classes C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE or D1E additionally:

• medical certificate

For the application for the issuance of driving license classes D, D1, DE, D1E additionally:

• certificate of good conduct

Note on first aid training: Proof of participation in first aid training is not required if you have already taken part in appropriate training. If in doubt, discuss this with your competent driving license authority.

You must submit an application to the relevant driving license authority and submit the required documents. Some driving license authorities have provided corresponding application forms for download on their homepage.

After submitting your application, the competent driving license authority will inform you about the procedure.

You can apply for a new driver's license at the earliest 6 months before the expiry of the ban period.

The processing time depends on the individual case.

The fee is based on the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).

If the driver's license is sent directly to the home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.

• Only the driving license classes specified in the Driving License Ordinance can be reissued; if necessary, the classes of the revoked driving license are converted.
• The new license can only be issued for the same scope of authorization as you had before the revocation.
• In individual cases, it may be necessary for you to take the driving test again.
