Do you want to keep aquatic animals (aquatic animals such as fish and crayfish) privately or commercially? Then you must register for this activity with your competent veterinary authority.

You must register the keeping of aquatic animals (aquatic animals such as fish and crayfish) with the competent veterinary authority. In addition to commercial agricultural animal husbandry, this also applies to purely hobby animal husbandry.

This applies to the private or commercial keeping of food fish. The keeping of ornamental fish only has to be reported if there is a direct connection between the water from this keeping and natural waters.

Registration must take place before the activity begins.
Animal husbandry must also be registered with the Hessischer Verband für Leistungs- und Qualitätsprüfungen in der Tierzucht e.V. (HVL). A registration number will be assigned to your animal husbandry there.

If there are any changes to your animal husbandry or if you cease keeping animals, you are obliged to notify the aforementioned authorities.

The veterinary authorities are responsible.
