Applying for entry in the dental register

Entry in the dentist register is a prerequisite for authorization as a contract dentist. It is also a prerequisite for approval as an employed dentist.

The Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZV) keeps a register of dentists for each registration district. The respective KZV in whose registration area your place of residence is located is responsible. Registration is a basic requirement for admission or employment as a contract dentist.

You will be entered in the register of dentists if the following requirements are met:

• Completed application accompanied by the required supporting documents. This includes the birth certificate, license to practice and, if necessary, other documents and evidence. Please refer to the application documents for details.
• Proof of at least two years of preparation.
  • Assistantships abroad can be recognized if they were completed in university dental clinics and patient-related work in all areas of dentistry is certified.
  • Up to 18 months of the required two-year preparation period can be recognized, provided that proof is provided of at least six months of uninterrupted, full-time work as an assistant for a contract dentist established in Germany.
  • Self-employed activities in your own (private) practice, activities of short duration (less than 3 weeks), dependent activities while simultaneously running your own practice, activities exceeding 21 months at a university dental clinic cannot be taken into account.
• If you wish to apply for a license, please ensure that you submit the application for entry in the dental register in good time, as this is a prerequisite for applying for a license.

The KZV in which the applicant resides is responsible for the entry in the dentist register. The responsibility for the license and the dentist register entry may differ.
