A second passport is generally valid for six years. If you have a temporary passport issued as a second passport, it is valid for a maximum of one year.

The competent authority for issuing a second passport is the passport authority (mayor) or the citizens' office of your place of residence.

You must prove a legitimate interest in possessing a second passport. This is the case, for example, in the following cases:

• You travel a lot for work reasons and need a second passport due to the time delays in obtaining visas.
• You want to travel to a country where you are likely to be denied entry because your passport shows that you have been in certain other countries.

Attention! General reasons or frequent trips abroad alone are not sufficient as a legitimate interest. Likewise, the reason for issuing a second passport is not sufficient that your passport is already fully stamped with visas. Even if you were already in possession of a second passport, you must prove the reasons again when reissued. Whether your reasons are considered sufficient is at the discretion of the passport authority.

• The second passport is issued only on request. You must submit the application in person and explain the reasons for your application conclusively.

It usually takes at least two weeks from the date of application before you can pick up your second passport at the Bürgeramt. If you need your passport document faster, you can also apply for it in the express procedure: If the express application is received by the passport producer by 12:00 noon, your passport is usually ready for collection at the Bürgeramt on the following third working day (Mon-Fri counts, excluding holidays). There is a surcharge for this service.

€37.50 for people under the age of 24; 60,00€ for persons who have reached the age of 24. The fee shall be doubled if the official act is performed at the initiative of the applicant outside working hours or with a non-competent authority.

Validity period of the second passport: 6 years
