Activate electronic proof of identity retrospectively

If you would like to activate your online ID function for electronic proof of identity at a later date, you can apply for this free of charge at the ID card authority.

You can declare to the ID card authority at any time that you wish to use the previously inactive electronic proof of identity function from now on. This application is only permitted if

• you are already 16 years old at the time of application and
• your identity card is valid.

The ID card authority will then subsequently activate the electronic proof of identity function free of charge.

Responsibility lies with the identity card authority (Lord Mayor or Mayor) or the citizens' office of the municipality of residence.

• ID card with online ID function

• You are German or German within the meaning of the Basic Law
• You have a valid identity card with online ID function

There are no fees.
